The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl star, Issa Rae is doing something so powerful that very few popular black celebrities to claim they’ve done that. After Issa Rae the video of two white cops murdering Alton Sterling in cold blood in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; she was so impacted by the killing she decided to start a GoFunMe campaign in order to send Sterling’s 5 children to college. The campaign has been up for less than 24 hours and it’s already near half-a-million dollars ($438,747)!
According to the GoFundMe campaign, Issa Rae has no connections to Alton Sterling or his family, “just sympathetic and empathetic.” The Insecure star only set out to raise $40,000 for the children and drew out a plans on social media on how she’s going to use the money for Sterling’s 5 children.

Will keep you all posted. In the meantime, keep spreading the word!” Issa Rae continued.
After seeing how well the GoFunMe campaign was doing, she raised the goal from $40,00 0 to $200,000. “Wow! $100k in 6 hours. This is so powerful,” she said. “Can we get to $200k? I’m doubling my pledge. That would be $40k for each of his 5 kids to go to college. Thank you all for uniting through the pain.”

“I love seeing how the community is pulling together to assist the Sterling family,” commented Nesta Howell. “I was wondering since the donations exceeded the goal amount, will the remainder go to funeral expenses or will all of it go towards the children’s college fund?”
“I was wondering the same thing,” Fiona Davis replied. “And I hope she is free to use this money however she needs to. I’ve been looking for a way to donate that goes to her directly so she can just focus on taking care of her family.”
Issa Rae is getting help from a financial planner out of Texas. He told Rae to set up a “tax-advantaged college savings plan” so Sterling’s can keep as much of the money as possible.
“I’m sure you’ve considered a number of options for the funds that you raise and, I’m not sure what your plans are for the funds once you’ve reached your goal,” wrote Fred Reynolds. “However, I would encourage you to look into opening a 529 College Savings plan. I hope this money truly helps this family.”
Issa Rae is a hero on my book. I wish more black celebrities will start doing this kind of thing. Imagine how much money can be raised to help murdered-by-cops victim family members if mega celebrities like Beyonce, Oprah, Tyler Perry et al were doing the same.
